Mission

The basis for the Starfinder-class was the Constitution-class and thus was designed as a multi-role deep-space exploration cruiser. It is able to operate for extended periods and project a Federation presence even further than before. It is extremely well armed and is one of the fastest ships in the fleet. It has lavish accommodations for diplomatic and courier missions and full of scientific laboratories and personnel to make the cruiser a superb exploratory and scientific platform.

Features

Using state-of-the-art Federation technology, the Starfinder-class is a technological marvel. It hosts modern Type X phaser banks, new Mk 90 DF photon torpedo launchers and a modern FSQ deflector shield. The Starfinder-class is one of the fastest ships in Starfleet. Capable of maximum warp speed of 9.9, the Starfinder-class is installed with a prototype warp drive, the LF-45. Also, a second prototype system, FIG-7 impulse drive, has been painstakingly installed, making the Starfinder-class capable of reaching .95 sublight speed.

As the Galaxy-class, the Starfinder-class is able to house families on board. This was calculated to counter the debilitating effects of long-term separation resulting from deep space exploration.

Background

The Starfinder-class is the brainchild of Admiral Aretha Ortega. Using her influence, the project started in 2361 despite objections from Starfleet Command. The objective was to take an old starship design and modernize it with cutting edge technology. The first starship selected for the program was the proven Constitution-class. Using its refit hull design as a basis, the starship was built with cutting-edge technology. The starship design begun as a light explorer but after last-minute changes in warp drive, impulse drive, and shield systems, the design was changed to heavy cruiser to accommodate all new systems. The design still retained its original crew composition and quarter complement as an explorer even though the official Starfleet classification is heavy cruiser.

The project’s first vessel, the U.S.S. Starfinder, was to be tested as a deep-space exploration vessel in the same spirit as the original Constitution-class was. Building the ship was arduous and more complicated than anticipated, making new modern designs, such as the Galaxy- and the Nebula-class much faster to produce with less impact on resources. Despite Admiral Ortega’s influence and U.S.S. Starfinder’s performance beyond Federation borders in search for new life and new civilizations, it is uncertain at this point if more Starfinder-class starships will be built in the future.
