As trained psychologists, Starfleet counselors can often tell what a speaker's motives are for his actions. During an Inquire (Interview) test, the counselor can also make a Medicine (Psychology) test to sense the speaker's motive. The Medicine (Psychology) test gets a +1 bonus to its result from a marginal success on the Inquire (Interview) test, a +2 for a complete success, and a +3 for an extraordinary success. It takes a -1 penalty for a complete failure on the Inquire (Interview) test, and a -2 penalty for a disastrous failure. Discerning a general, emotional motive (revenge, lust, pride) is a TN 15 task; discerning a specific motive (Senator Pardek's blackmail; Yeoman Barrows, a promotion) is a TN 20 task.

Professional Abilities

Atmospheric Craft

The flight control officer has learned to pilot various atmospheric craft, including not only shuttles, but also archaic fixed and rotary wing aircraft. The character gains a +2 bonus to System Operation (Flight Control) tests made to pilot atmospheric craft. Each upgrade increases the bonus by +2.

Evasive Maneuvers

The conn bears the responsibility of getting the ship out of danger or maneuvering it into a better tactical position. When required to perform maneuver actions in space combat, she rolls an additional die (3d6), but keeps the highest two rolls. The rule for rolling double 6's still applies.

While anyone with the proper skill can enter coordinates into a flight control station, Conn officers receive extensive training in space navigation. When the conn makes System Operations (Flight Control) skill tests, he gains an affinity bonus equal to half his Space Sciences skill level, rounding up (+4).

Systems Technician

While qualified engineers usually make any repairs to the flight console, the conn has sufficient training to recalibrate equipment, reprogram the controls, and make minor repairs in emergency situations. When making repairs, the conn can reroll one Systems Engineering (Flight Control) test and use the better of the two results. This ability may be used only once per game session.
