Timothy Smith had done statistical analysis on the death rates and other indicators in different cities and areas within the USA
The town of Antonburg in Nebraska had risen up as an outlier
- It's rates of illness and death were significantly higher than on similar areas
The town seemed to be doing rather well
- The cases of sickness and death were concentrated on a trailer park at the edge of the town
  - The indicators were poor even for such a desolate place
Speaking with the locals gave no clue on the reasons behind the deaths
A local pastor filled with enthusiasm was arranging for food distribution to the poorest residents of the trailer park
- No signs of spoiling of the food
Visit to the trailer park found little more
- General apathy of the residents
- Air, water and soil samples
Some of the group spent a night in the trailer park as an experiment
- Signs of mental dullness and lack of concentration were detected already after this short stay
- This gave new spirit to our research
No theory seemed to help with the cause for the apathy
Researching the history of the region showed that the area had been considered sacred by the local native tribes
- Questioning the native Americans at the closest reservation about their mythology did not help
In the evening we received a call from pastor Ragnvaldsson
- He sounded distressed and asked for us
When we met at the church, he told that he had been attacked by oddly aggressively behaving dogs
